An Introduction to Scientology: Beliefs, Practices, and Controversies

This course provides an introduction to the religion of Scientology, exploring its beliefs, practices, and controversies. Students will examine the history and development of Scientology, as well as its core beliefs and practices. Additionally, the course will examine the controversies surrounding Scientology, including critiques of its practices and accusations of abuse and mistreatment of members.

The course will cover a range of topics related to Scientology, including the life of its founder L. Ron Hubbard, the concept of the Thetan, the E-meter and auditing, and the Sea Organization. Students will also explore the role of Scientology in popular culture and its relationship to other religions and spiritual practices.

Throughout the course, students will engage in critical analysis of the teachings and practices of Scientology, as well as the controversies surrounding the religion. Students will be encouraged to examine these issues from a variety of perspectives, and to think critically about the ways in which religion can both inspire and challenge individuals and communities.

By the end of the course, students will have gained a foundational understanding of the beliefs, practices, and controversies surrounding Scientology, as well as a deeper appreciation for the ways in which religion can shape and influence individuals and societies.
